What is Instrument Air?

The term “Instrument Air” refers to an extremely clean supply of compressed air that is free from contaminates such as moisture & particulates. A system may utilize instrument air for various types of pneumatic equipment, valves & electrical controls.

High efficiency filtration eliminates issues with pneumatic valves and electrical/pneumatic controls caused by suspended liquids, such as compressor oil and particulates that are often present in plant air, also known as service air. By utilizing filtration, supplying instrument air when needed ensures the proper functioning of equipment, valves, and controls, and possibly preventing failure of these components.

Our grade 70C and 50C coalescing elements are best suited for instrument air service since they are rated at 0.01 microns against 95% and 99.99% efficiency, respectively. You definitely do not want to only use a particulate grade element since it will not remove liquids. The coalescing elements will do both.

Most Instrument Air applications are relatively low pressure making our 300 series ideal in most situations. However, any of our T-Type housings fitted with a coalescing filter element may be utilized for “instrument air” service. Filters should be placed as close to the application as possible to insure complete protection.

Instrument Air Filters

United Filtration offers several types of filter assembly’s ideal for an instrument air supply applications. We offer a full line of inline T-Style aluminum filter assembly’s, as well as integral filter regulators. The heart of both of these units is the bonded glass microfiber coalescing filter element which provides superior protection down to 0.01 micron.

Our aluminum 300 series is offered in a variety of sizes with ports ranging from 1/8” to 2” FNPT available with either an aluminum bowl or clear polycarbonate bowl for optimal visual inspection. Once again, all units are supplied with a high-efficiency coalescing filter element rated at 0.01 micron removal. With a variety of options offered, the 300 series can be used in laboratory/analytical environments, as well as rugged outdoor service, or, where ever clean dry instrument air is required.

In some instrument air applications, a membrane dryer is used where lowering the dew point is required. An example could be providing instrument air to an outdoor air-conditioned analyzer shed in a southern climate.

Compressor Stations

Compressor stations are an integral part of the natural gas transport system since these stations move the gas to market through the pipeline network. These are typically spread 40 to 60 miles apart and compress natural gas to move it through the pipelines to the final destination.

Most stations use either a Turbine/Centrifugal Compressor or a Reciprocating Engine Compressor to compress the natural gas. Each type of compressor uses a small amount of gas to fuel the compressor which is referred to as “Fuel Gas”.

Although pipeline gas is considered dry it still needs to go through a series of filters and scrubbers. Each compressor requires a high efficiency coalescing filter to clean up the “Fuel Gas” so it does not foul the engine. Our borosilicate microfiber elements have a 20 plus year track record of working in trying environments and protecting compressors.

United Filtration offers a complete line of “Fuel Gas” filters to remove up to 99.99% of liquids/solids. Our 300 Series Anodized Aluminum filters are ideal for this application with pressure ratings up 1,500 PSIG.
